The News of La Gazette Des Arts No. 30 of february 15th, 2016
The Dépêche de la Gazette des Arts celebrates its 30th publication !
Supported by an increasing number of faithful readers, it invites us to explore time marching on, the evolution of art, creation in all its diversity. Let us start then with the leader of the Bible, and of the Torah which is the teaching given by the prophet Moses, to whom the Musée d’ art et d’ histoire du Judaïsme pays tribute, in deciphering its representation through the history of painting, to be read in Les bons plans de la Dépêche. We should note, in the section Du côté des artistes, the phantasmagorical, full of history universe of Sergeï Prolakov. While Echos de Psyché looks into the part of emotion in painting. Art becomes emancipated, is democratized... Urban art enjoys a fair wind, to be read in Actualité du marché de l’art.
And as always our delightful nuggets for relaxation and knowledge, to be read in Le coin du bibliophile.
Many thanks to all
Artistically Yours
Georges LEVY

Moses : the Revelation
From his representation at the synagogue of Doura Europos, in what is now Syria, to the book of Philon of Alexandria, through Martin Luther King who deeply worshiped him in constant and fertile dialogue with rabbi Abraham Josha Heschel, or even Michelangelo’s masterwork sculpted for the grave of Pope Julius II, in Rome... The figure of Moses, potent stature carrying the tablets of the Law, is omniscient. Present in arts, philosophy, literature or politics, it conveys a knowledge, a wisdom whose ‘ reach ‘ of message inspired many creators. The exhibition Moïse, figure d’un prophète presented at the musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme is more than an evocation, this is the living testimony of a fate striking in intensity.
One hundred and fifty paintings, sculptures, drawings, engraving pieces, works of art, manuscripts and books illustrate the importance and the diversity of his image from Antiquity to the present day.
Moses is the prophet who saw God, had a dialogue with him, experienced what is unspeakable then has come back down to testify among men. He is the one who passed on the Torah. In his " Vie de Moïse ", the book by Philon of Alexandria, Moses becomes the ideal philosopher king, high priest, legislator and prophet. He personifies strength, open-mindedness, endowed with a visionary and liberating spirit. The Fathers of the Church see in him, the most accomplished prefiguration of Christ !
Before founding, in 1906, the school Bezalel in Jerusalem, Boris Schatz starts a cycle of conferences about the figure of the prophet. Clear examples that prove that one likes to be close to him, out of necessity or dedicatedly, but also in order to benefit from his virtues... Could he have been the supplier at the source of Zionism ?
Therefore the prophet is an intercessor who guides us toward the light. The representation of the Revelation, the gift of the Law to Sinai are, in this regard, recurring themes that we find just as well in Chagall, Poussin or Philippe de Champaigne.
He is a model of humility who gathers together humanity.
Le Pentateuque closes on this sentence: " No prophet has ever risen over Israel like Moses, whom the Lord has known face to face ".

Du coté des artistes...
Sergey Frolakov : the sixth sense tested by his time
To be taken hold of by Sergey Frolakov’s paintings it is a little bit going back in history.
Fascinating not to say mesmerizing, his painting invites us to revisit our space, to wonder about the effects more or less perverted of a urbanity that sometimes is beyond us by the dimension of its acts that lead to the decrease of man and take him to his fall.
Architect and designer, the artist’s look at the society is inspired from a phantasmagorical scene, where each detail reveals a mystery, a mood and a vision of the future.
At the same time tragic and sincere, sensual and moving his work seems to travel through time. In Jérôme Bosch’s way, to confront religious to laic, hell to paradise...
Native of Saint Petersburg, Sergey Frolakov is riveted on that land of choice, permeated with greatness, open gate to Europe that never stops influencing him in his choices, in his marks by the attraction out of it.
The approach that he has of it then is inseparable of the deep feeling he feels in front of each building, the memory of its institutions, the beauty of its services.
His touch is the reflection of a life, the resounding testimony of a past of which he still seeks the inmost foundation and the reasons to hope.
Consequently his painting is elusive, fascinating with the ardour of its subjects, surprising by the progress of a thought that only imagination controls and transforms as it pleases.
A great work then that cannot leave without reaction.

Echo de Psyché
When the heart beats for art
" One doesn’t only paint with colours, one paints with feelings "
What a truth that this sentence by Chardin which holds your breath... A fruit hanging from the branch that makes us feel astounded, puzzled or fills us with joy by the beauty of a living, moving nature, giving the best of itself, at each instant.
Emotion is this vibration, this matrix, raw material of art, of desire and dreaming.
The art work is a feeling, a breathing, an inhibited part of our inner self that gets clear and flies away in the open, in the unmasked shape made visible by a painting that gives life to them and fills them with light.
A sentiment, a communion which invite us to sharing and communication.
The magic of emotion tends towards what is universal. It is revelation, enchantment, incitement to creationconstantly renewed.
Act of greatness which seems today compromised by too much quickness, superficiality.
Could we forget that the artist who create his work and languages raising our expectations, comes up to the construction of knowledge, in the direction of awareness and wisdom ?
Today, it is clear that contemporary art, in its different phases, doesn’t inspire emotion anymore.
Yet it is a human experience dealing with mystery and spirituality. Fundamental, it is a source of our reason, of our madness and of its imagination, too.
Structures that train us, transform us... All in all they make us exist.
To annihilate them, that is willing to make man deprived of the vital part which is creation.

Strong upturn for urban Art
Auction records at Artcurial, a first exhibition that will open in Paris next Spring, an increased presence in Morocco, with a special event in Essaouira around the italian artist Giacomo Bufarini, alias RUN on the occasion of the 6th Biennale d’ Art contemporain of Marrakech... The carrying out of a performance within the théâtre de l’ Européen, we could say that urban Art or Street art is doing well.
Among the main currents, slandered for a long time, it has been able to find its place. To comply with the rules of the game and of the space.
As specified by the experts, it conveys a message, in the open. A breath of freedom that makes sense of common things, of our environment.
An excitement, a complementory language which allows to come out of the main distribution circuits. Street Art doesn’ t have the task of shocking, but of exploring some new contexts, some shapes popping up from nowhere. Along with RUN, supporter of the mural revival which was one of the first aspects of urban Art stuffed with symbols.
